Out & About

With Ron Kaufman, internationally acclaimed innovator and motivator for partnerships and quality services. Ron helps organisations around the world achieve superior service, increase customer loyalty, creates strong partnerships and build winning teams.

At the Asia Speakers' Association (ASA), Ron was the special guest speaker who gave the keynote speech on How to Build a Powerful Public Identity for professional speakers. You know, that's not such a bad idea for anyone, regardless of whether you're a professional speaker or not.

Imagine if YOU had a powerful public identity! What would that get for you? How would that impact on your daily routines? How would others be perceiving you?

To build a powerful public identity, I'd suggest you do the following things:

  • Become the expert in your defined field
  • Do it better than anyone else
  • Study it a little more each and every day
  • Think it, dream it, live it
  • Think about it every day and act on it
  • Focus, focus, focus
  • Stick to it
  • Push as hard as you can
  • Take massive action on the project

Soon you'll be known throughout your organisation or the industry as a powerful person with a powerful public identity. Better to be known as strong and aggressive than to be known as meek and docile.

Dear Reader,

A hearty Welcome to all the new subscribers to Ricky's Review! I trust you will find something of interest to fire up your day and at the same time to pick up some tips and hints to act on that will pay you great dividends.

Have you had a hard disk in your computer crash? Well, often you hear of others having one, but it's never happened to you. Right? Well, it happened to me, and when you read the error message come up on your screen, "Cannot find operating system", don't you get such a chill up your spine?

Well, at first, I didn't know what was going on because I'd never had this sort of message before, so out came the Iomega backup floppy discs and I backed up before you could say "Johnny Flamingo"! Was there a problem? Well...not until much later did I realise that the Iomega hadn't backed up all the latest versions of files that I had! Scary!

Moral of the story? Backup! And backup frequently! Don't let it happen to you! I've learned my lesson now, obtained an external hard drive and am backing up regularly!

I trust you'll enjoy reading this edition of the newsletter!

  • Dynamics of Presentations
  • The latest group of Dynamic Presenters at the Hyatt Hotel! At the public workshop organised by JobsDB, we had a great learning time on how to 'pitch' in the best possible way.

Time and time again, the greatest barrier to persuasive presentations is fear. Fear of looking silly, fear of forgetting what we're trying to say, fear of rambling, fear of the audience asking us hard questions. As we learned during the workshop, one of the most basic defences against fear is to take deep and calming breaths well before you stand and deliver.

Once you learn how to calm yourself down before you start to speak, that helps you at least 50% of the way towards making a great presentation. So the next time before you stand and deliver your presentation, take a few deep, calming breaths before you stand up to take your position.

When you're standing in front of your audience, take two or three seconds to look at your audience first to establish rapport and create your presence, then launch strongly into your introduction. You'll find that this technique will help you to blast off to make a successful presentation. And remember to relax, and have a good time! Your audience wants that too!

  • The Heart of Leadership
  • My son, The Graduate at Sydney University and his proud family! I travelled to Sydney during April to attend Justin's (my son) graduation ceremony. It's quite an event, with hundreds of graduates in their long flowing gowns and mortar caps with proud parents and relatives celebrating the day!

Eyes get a little misty as you watch in wonderment in the great University Hall at that good looking young man or young woman who used to, not too long ago, run around as a toddler, then start their kindergarden, begin secondary school, then to university, then finally graduation!

Now that Justin's graduated with his B.Educ., B.Teach (Primary), he'll be starting to teach the young children soon to be leaders from a young age. To lead first in the 3R's i.e. reading, riting and 'rithmatic. And after that to pursue a higher purpose such as mind, body, heart, and spirit. Covey describes mind as related to vision, body to discipline, heart to passion and spirit to conscience. That is really elegant and empowering.

Teaching's a great profession. Of course, I'm just a little bit biased towards this profession, but to me, teaching is leading! Whether it's Justin teaching the young children or me teaching adults, we're both performing a leadership role.

Stephen Covey, internationally acclaimed leadership guru released his latest book, The 8th Habit late last year.Stephen's one of my favourite authors and mentors and I became acquainted and entranced with his work back in 1989 when he released his seminal book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Stephen's message in his latest book, The 8th Habit, is to find your voice (your spirit) and to help release this voice in others. The book comes with a bonus DVD which is included in the price. It's a beautifully done DVD with 16 short movies - many of them just priceless!

I'm glad to say that I've subscribed to Stephen's principle even before he published his book. One of my aims is to set others up for success. I'm dedicated to making you successful and not to let you fail. You see, most managers set their people up for failure.

Many managers just don't know how to coach, mentor or encourage their staff to do their best. They expect their staff to do well, but leave the staff alone to their own devices. When mistakes arise, they blame their staff and are hard on them. That's no way to run a business. Staff are far too important for bosses to rule them this way.

The way to build an awesome business? Manage the arrangements. Lead the staff. Go hard and manage the perfect execution of practices and procedures. But be kind to the people. Teach your staff to motivate themselves. To empower themselves. That way, you're not treating them like a jackass - carrot in front as enticement and the stick behind if they don't perform!

I know that Justin will become a good teacher. After all, he's a chip of the old block (well, I've got to blow my own trumpet!). Perhaps he'll even become a great teacher. And when he finally lays claim to the Heart of Leadership, then others will find the passion in his work. Work no longer is just a career. Work now becomes a mission in life when the heart's on fire!

What would happen if your heart was on fire with your mission clearly in mind and you were determined to pay the price of success? What would you achieve? Would you achieve most of your dreams? All of your dreams?

Make the coming month another great one! Until I see you again, take some risks, be forward, be brave, be your own great leader!

    Lead With Passion!
