Out & About

The Dragons in our lives!

****************************************

I was walking through my favourite shopping centre at Parkway Parade when I saw a large crowd of onlookers goggling at this huge sand dragon on the floor. I grabbed my camera out of my bag and made several shots, this one turning out the way I wanted.

In life, how many dragons do we face but turn away because we're afraid of what might happen? Take a look at the little boy at the far left upper corner of the photograph who's standing with both hands in his pockets. He seems to be saying, "Uhhh...I'm not really frightened of you, so I'll show you so by putting my hands in my pocket in a casual attitude!" You can bet that he's really not quite sure of it!

Have a look at the woman in the brown sleeveless t-shirt who's standing in front of her male companion. Hmmm...she seems to be saying, this thing looks a bit scary.

And finally, take a look at the boy in the bottom left hand side of the picture who's wearing a red t- shirt. He's got his arms across his body, and he seems to be saying, "Awww...this thing looks a bit scaaary, I'd better go away!"

The point is, how many dragons do we face in our lives that we're not equipped to face? As leaders of our journey in life, have we equipped ourselves to face the fears and pitfalls of disappointments and failures? Are we truly hardy enough to keep on going when the going gets tough?

Often we get stopped by things outside of ourselves. Or so we think. We really are only allowing the dragons inside of ourselves to stop us.

Let's be like St George, prepare to meet our dragons in life head-on, kill them, and get on with our life's mission!

Greetings!

Just around the corner is 1 October. Yes...it's the start of the last quarter for 2006. Once 1 October hits, it's 90 days before the end of 2006.

Did you know that it takes just 90 days for the US Marine Corps to mould an out-of-shape recruit who's never held a weapon before, and in just under 90 days turn him from an ordinary soldier into a lean-mean-fighting machine?

We all know that the four seasons in the Northern and Southern Hemisphere takes 90 days to change from season to season. From the harshest of Winters, it takes only 90 days to turn into the beauty and gentleness of Spring.

And of course, most crops take only one season, i.e., 90 days to go from seed to harvest crop. It works with Mother Nature, it also works with dreams and goals. It can literally take only 90 days for you to change something. But only if you truly desire it. You've got to visualise it. Strongly. Closely. So close that you can just reach out and touch it. You've got to smell it...imagine the sweet smell of success is right there in front of your nose.

And you must imagine it so close that you think you're surrounded by your success. Yes, if it only takes three quarters in a year for an embryo to grow into a human baby, that's three lots of 90 days, imagine what you could do. If you really tried. But you must want it bad enough to do it. You must have passion to carry it through. Then you must have courage to break through all barricading habits that'll stop you from achieving your goal.

And lastly, you MUST ACT on that goal. Break the goals down into smaller tasks and move relentless towards it. I know so many special people who have done great things who have gone through these steps. Think of the mountain climber. Step by step. Each step takes them closer to their goal. Each step takes them closer to the peak. And it's not without risks. Some quit and return home before they make it to the top for whatever reason. Some become campers. And the few who don't quit, just carry on...and they make it. I know YOU can make it to the top. Just don't quit.

To get that leadership spirit - why don't you come and attend one of our Wednesday evening FREE Challenge of Leadership seminars? Go on... just click here and find out more about it!

Those who've signed on, but haven't come, come on over! And those who've been coming, just keep on coming! 90 days isn't long. That's just 12 weeks - just one quarter - just one season. That's why I'm sponsoring this 90 days Challenge of Leadership for you to turn 2007 into what you want it to be!

See you there!

In the efforts of improving my speech, I recently realised that I am a victim of having the staccato effect. I was also told that it is a common feature in most Singaporeans. I needed to know how to minimise this and sought one of my favourite language book called ëSingapore English in a Nutshell' by Adam Brown.

In his book, he tried to pin down the particular pronunciation features which contribute to this effect and found three main conclusions.

    1.Linking
In spelling we separate words with spaces. However, these do not correspond to anything in Standard English speech. Instead, words are naturally linked together, especially where one word ends with a consonant sound and the following begins with a vowel sound. For example, a sentence like I eat an apple every afternoon is pronounced as if it were I yea ta napple levery yafternoon.

    2.Vowel Length
In Standard English accents, there are distinctions in the lengths of vowel sounds. Bead is appreciably longer than bid, because the first word contains a long vowel which is a different vowel from that in the second. These length distinctions are typically absent - or not so great ñ in Singapore English where all vowel sounds are generally quite short. Thus, peep, peat, and peak may all be pea', with a relatively short vowel sound.

    3. Stress
Singapore English pronunciation does not have a strongly stress-based rhythm. As a result, there is often only a small contrast between stressed and unstressed syllables. Thus the vowel sounds of the two syllables in a word like promote may be the same for Singapore English speakers, while in Standard English accents the unstressed first vowel weakens to schwa /ә/.

An over-reliance on the spelt forms could have brought about the staccato effect in Singapore English. Let the words flow and you will be a better speaker in no time.

  • Maideen's Monthly Masala
  • A brain-storming paradox to chew upon this month.

    The Lunch Paradox

Three business executives were lunching in a restaurant, discussing the upcoming Ricky's Voice of Leadership workshop in November. They had estimated their bill to be $30 and had put down $10 each. When the actual bill came, it was only $25 Realising $25 was not divisible by 3 exactly, they each took back a dollar and left the $2 as a tip for the waiter. Hence, each had actually paid $9 Multiplied by 3 people, that makes $27 Add the $2 tip, that'll add to $29! Where did the other dollar go, since they started with $30?

Maideen says: E-mail me your answer to this interesting paradox at maideenvk@mindsetmedia.com.sg.

  • Quote of the Day
  • From Stuart Wilde, one of my favourite philosophers, from his book, "The Secrets of Life" , 1990

On Marriage: In marriage or any relationship, you have to learn to communicate. What's fun about relationships is that the other person reflects back to you who you are. When you're married, your spouse tends to let you know of your shortcomings extremely quickly. Like about in two minutes flat. So you learn about yourself and begin to see yourself in a new light.

    And that's worth thinking about!
