Out & About
With my friend from childhood days, Peter Soo, who
came down from Malaysia to visit his extended family
in Singapore.
****************************************
Do you remember the fun times you had with
childhood friends when you were growing up as a
child? Ever think back to those times, wherever you
grew up at, and reminisce about the antics you got up
to?
Well, I had the pleasure of meeting up just recently
with Peter Soo,
a friend from my childhood days. He came down
from Perak, Malaysia to spend 3 days in Singapore
with his son and extended family. I was invited to
spend the day at his son's home and Peter and I
spent the entire afternoon
chatting and recalling all that we used to do together,
remembering the friends that we used to play with, the
games we got up to, the difference that progress has
made to the village that we both grew up in.
Peter owns oil palm plantations and he's
semi-retired. Obviously a successful businessman, I
asked
him about life as an oil palm plantation owner, how he
got to plant his trees, how he got the palm seeds out
during harvest, how he worked with the buyers and
how they then sold it to the oil palm production
companies. Most interesting, it's like harvesting gold
from the ground up!
Talking to an old friend is easy. There's nothing to
compete, nothing to challenge, nothing to be afraid of.
The relationship was made in the past, time has
allowed the friendship to mature, and I found that
when we finally caught up with each other, we had
both mellowed out and along with insight, maturity
and independence, had accumulated a decent
amount of wisdom.
In youth we spend so much time in getting knowledge
and skills and waiting impatiently for the future. In
maturity, we gain wisdom and hindsight of our
adventures in life.
Ahhh....those good old days of youth! I remember I
could choose to fly a kite, catch fish in the open
monsoon drains,
dig for earthworms in the soft, moist earth after a
heavy thunderstorm, catch dragonflies by their tails.
Or become Superboy, Batman or Rocket Man just by
saying the magic word.....Abracadabra....
Our childhood is still within us. We need to arouse
this within us as I think we often get far too
serious as an 'adult'. We should smile more, laugh
more, share some good times round. Smell the
freshly falling rain, feel the rain's
warm drops on your face, hear the swish of the wind
against the palm fronds, feel the sand beneath your
toes along the beach - have a splash in the rain
puddles!
Childhood is where our inner child is. Don't allow
ourselves to lose this charming phenomenon that is
truly ours and ours alone to keep! We might grow old
in age, but do stay forever young by letting our inner
child shine out!
I hope you too, will find a longtime old friend, and have
a whole afternoon to yourselves to chat, to remember,
to laugh, and to bring back lots of memories from
childhood!

Greetings!
This month, I attended the "East Meets West"
Leadership Speaking workshop in Charlotte, North
Carolina. It was one of the best programmes that I've
ever attended. Spending two days with the giants of
the communication industry, Patricia
Fripp
and Ty
Boyd was a real experience! It was a
fabulous workshop
topped off with an extra special half-day coaching
clinic on the
third day.
You should have been there with me! I was
shown a number of ways to make an impact,
influence, and coach others to improvement. The
learning of the art of communication was never so
much fun and insightful as facilitated by the Cavett
award winners Patricia Fripp (First Woman President
of National Speakers Association) and Ty Boyd ( the
only man on the planet who has won the Cavett
Award, the Master of Influence award, and inducted
into the Broadcasters Hall of Fame.)
If you wish to re-ignite your career with some powerful
presentation and communication skills, I am
presenting a 2-day public workshop, Present
Yourself Powerfully...How to be a Creative, Confident
Communicator in Singapore
on 22-23 November 2007. For more
details of this powerful and creative two-day
presentation and communication workshop, please click here.
Go have your best month ever! ...

"East Meets West" Speaking School

At the "East Meets West" Speaking School
in Charlotte, North Carolina.
L-R: Molly Boyd Hunt, Ty Boyd, Me, Patricia Fripp, Pat
Boyd
***********************************************************
My highlight for September was attending the "East
Meets West" speaking school at Charlotte, North
Carolina. Having been a fan of Patricia Fripp for some
time, I made the time to travel to the States. I had a
terrific experience in learning, meeting new people,
and polishing myself.
Ty Boyd, who was co-presenting "East Meets West" is
a powerhouse presenter who's been inducted into the
Broadcasting Hall of Fame and who, along with Fripp
has also been awarded the highest award in public
speaking, the Cavett Award, was truly a joy to have in
the seminar room.
Ty opened the 2-day session with several points. He
said all of us have lots of skills that have brought us to
where we are. But the truth is, the most important skill,
that very vital skill is the ability to communicate
effectively with customers, family, friends, neighbours,
children, bosses, influencers, and anyone else who's
connected with our future.
He mentioned that world class athletes like Roger
Federer and Tiger Woods get a lesson a day from
their coaches, and they practice that lesson for hours
daily! It's not about taking short cuts or putting on the
tricks or smart talking, it's about getting down to the
basics of doing it well.
It's about being the most powerful person that we can
be! It's not about being perfect because that's an
imperfect way to live. It's about excellence. It's about
reaching our own Olympic standard in our ability to
communicate with others.
Distinguished people are above average
communicators. Ty mentioned that presentation skills
are relationship skills - it's beyond, "How now, brown
cow'.
It's about making dozens of highly relational, intimate
connections every day!
So we sharpen our toolbox daily to connect. Every
day, we practice our openings, content and closings.
We're ready to connect and not just to connect, but to
connect powerfully. When we speak, we look at the
eyes of our audience, and we can be intimate. We
create a deep and meaningful relationship. Just this
one technique would help us to build stronger
intimacy with our listeners.
Food for thought? I think so. And Ty reminded us that
everyday, we need to, "Fire our purpose with passion!"
Imagine that! You would be unbeatable in your
purpose! Would that make a difference in your
relationships?
I definitely think so. So here's a tip...upon waking up in
the morning, make an affirmation that you're going
to, "Fire up my purpose today with passion!" And the
bonus is, you can keep on visualising this thought the
whole day through!
And what was Patricia Fripp's thoughts on making
presentations? In a nutshell, use powerful stories as
introductions, include a clear premise of your talk,
then proceed to argue your point by using analogies,
stories, examples so that the audience sees how they
can reach your premise and get what they want.
Her message also addressed the importance of
connecting with the audience by including them in
your conversation - she called it a high I:YOU ratio. In
other words, you shouldn't always be talking about
how good you are, but to include the audience in your
talk and make them the centre of interest and focus.
The examples and demonstrations that Patricia gave
were specific, concrete, and inclusive. I'm sure that
every delegate took lots of learning away from the
seminar.
So was "East Meets West" worth going to? Yes,
without a doubt. And I'm planning to go again in the
new year to attend a three-day session with Ty Boyd's
'Excellence in Speaking Institute.'
Even a professional like me needs coaches and
mentors to improve my life skills. Even Tiger and
Roger have coaches to improve their game. So how
about you?

Quote of the Day

From Stuart Wilde, one of my favourite
philosophers, from his book,
The Secrets of Life
ON BEING IN FLOW
"Once you are balanced and in flow and you've
simplified your life, you come out of this warrior's spirit
and are not putting any negativity into your life. Then
you are safe, you're abundant. You can begin to get
totally in touch with who you are, and what you are is
your gift to the world.
You, your knowledge, your spirit, your creativity, your
laughter, your positivity, the things that you have to
offer - that is your gift to the world and you can charge
for it.
Because we're not here necessarily to give it for
nothing."
