Out & About

Some of the 200+ staff of Singapore Press Holdings at their sales retreat on Batam Island! It was a strong contingent of sea-faring SPH staff who gave up their weekend and braved the ferry journey across the waters to Batam Island!

Special efforts were put in by the organising committee and the candles and aromatherapy oils infused the two days with a magical atmosphere of calm and cool in order for the classified division staff to prepare for the coming few months of new challenges to meet strong sales targets.

I'm sure we'll see them rising like Gold Medal Olympic Athletes to the Challenge of 2004!

I hope you've had a productive & active August month. I did, and because of time constraints, I've combined the August and September edition newsletters into one easy read.

WELCOME to those new subcribers who've just joined my newsletter readership - I trust that you will get something useful out of reading it, and when you do, I know that it will be something that will be useful and resourceful for you in whatever you're doing in life.

  • Wheel of Life
  • Pictured are some of the staff at Singapore Press Holdings who attended a Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) workshop. Notice how they're using their arms as strong anchors of success!

One of the most useful topics we went through during the workshop was to look at and to balance our Wheel of Life which includes the following goals to focus on and to reach at a high rating (between 1 [low] and 10 [highest]):

    1. Health
    2. Family
    3. Money
    4. Relationships
    5. Contribution
    6. Vision
    7. Career
    8. Personal Development

For us to have more motivation and 'get-up-and- go', we'll forever be missing our mark until we know what areas of our life we're shooting for. The Wheel of Life is actually drawn in a circle, and each of the above items represent a spoke. So the question is, on a scale of 1 - 10, 1 being lowest and 10 being highest, where would we rate ourselves as being on each particular spoke?

The next step is to look at any of the spokes that rated 5 or below and to build up a 90 day action plan, ensuring that they took at least 3 action steps on that goal before they left it. Imagine what would happen now on a daily basis as each participant 'attack's each spoke of their lives to strengthen it?

I challenge you to do this! Then write down each goal and ensure you do the action necessary daily until you reach that goal. Why a 90 days action plan? Because 90 days is an easy target to shoot for.

Continue onwards with your daily actions untill the first 90 days. Then review what you've achieved so far and draw up another action plan for the next 90 days. You'll be pleasantly surprised, as 4 lots of 90 days will equal one year, and you would have achieved some great milestones by the end of the year!

  • Self-Esteem
  • Let's have a look at what self-esteem is. It has several components, and once we're able to sort ourselves out in this most important way, we 'esteem' or 'value' ourselves. Life then becomes easier and a lot less stressful.

Some of the important components that make it up are:

    • Self-confidence
    • Self-respect
    • Self-efficacy (your judgement of your ability to cope with life)
    • Ability to understand and master your problems
    • Accepting your right to be happy
    • Ability to respect and stand up for your interests & needs
    • Feel confident appropriate to life
    • Feel 'right' as a person

We all need to work on our self-esteem as we do daily battle to earn our living. Our 'self' gets bombarded with negative free electrons (you can also call these other people!) daily while living and working.

Find some quiet time daily to explore your inner thoughts & emotions. Reflect on who you are, what you are becoming, and whether you are fulfilling your purpose in life. Write down your thoughts on affirmation cards, and review what you've written several times a time.

Take firm steps to go towards what you really want to be. You will find this to be a real boost for your self-esteem.

  • And finally...
  • Just a reminder to read and study at least one book every month! You'll gain a tremendous lot as you keep on doing this with focus and insistence.

My own reading habits include reading a book a week, and this has contributed in such a big way to my own personal development. Why don't you try this too? Just write this up as part of your 90 days action plan.

Until next time, au revoir and remember to work on your 90 day action plans. May you always get what you want, and have joy in whatever you do!

    Best wishes,

    Ricky
