Out and About

Happy Valentine's Day to all our lovers out there!

We're all in some sort of relationships. At work, at home, with our friends, with others in our community, and many of us have friends and associates that span the world. Life is about relationships. And during the length of our lives, when all our money and good health has gone, all we're left with are our relationships. I've always found that good relationships need time to mature, and it's the way we nurture our relationships that make into good friendships.

I've found that life, with all of its busy-ness and biznesses to conquer, doesn't give us a lot of time to find new friends. So let's make the best out of our relationships with all those special people that we have contact with.

Don't criticise, condemn or complain. Just show others how to do better by being a role model. Praise more, but be sincere when praising others. People and horses are much the same according to Bart Cummings, the famous Australian horse trainer - a pat on the head is better than a kick on the rump!

Be kind, be courteous, be polite, be tactful, be persuasive. And above all, turn those special people in your lives into special relationships that will give you continuous joy in your lives!

Mastering Working Relationships
Master your relationships at work. True teamwork and collaboration, which is a competency of emotional intelligence (EI), works wonders when the pressure is on. We all need each other for integration of our work. No one stands alone as each person produces some form of output to be passed along to the next person, be it colleague, customer, or boss.

To get along and to build relationships at work, PRAISE more and just show how much you appreciate each other. In fact, PRAISE is an acronym that if you will memorise and practice it daily, you will reap more benefits that you can imagine. So when you do praise, do it this way:

P = personally: direct all your attention towards the other. Use sincere eye contact.

R = regularly. Be consistent with giving it.

A = assertively. Don't be coy about giving it.

I = immediately. Don't wait too long before doing it.

S = sincerely. If you're not sincere, it's false.

E = explicitly. Describe the reason why you are praising.

One of the greatest needs of human beings is to be recognised and appreciated. If you understand this principle, and use it accordingly and appropriately, you will build true teamwork and collaboration. Just try this at home and see the difference this philosophy makes! You won't regret it!

Born to Win -
Championing the Inner Child

Many of us suffer from damaged self-esteem. It's not a healthy position to maintain, and what we might want to consider doing is to have a repair programme or a personal development programme in place to strengthen or to bolster this in our adult working lives.

When we're troubled inside with hurt feelings or we're not self-confident, our working lives become insular and we tend to be more focused on our own needs than on whoever we are interacting with at that time.

One technique is to embrace the use of positive affirmations into your life. Take a 3 x 5 index card and write a strengthening, uplifting affirmation, for example, "Everyday, in every way, I am getting better and better".

Don't keep on repeating it ad-infinitum. First, you must prepare your mind. Truly believe in it, then picture yourself in that situation or position when you have reached that best situation! Once that picture is firmly fixed in your mind, now repeat your affirmation to yourself at least 10 times. Do it at least twice a day. More if you want to.

With your small affirmation card, carry it around with you. At any time, e.g., at the bus-stop, on the bus, on the MRT, on the way to work, when you're coming home from work, silently read it, picture it in your mind, and affirm it strongly to yourself.

You will be amazed at your level of self-esteem as it goes up, up and up within a very short period of time.

Do write to me and tell me how this works for you!

In closing...

Make it a great month in February. Make every day count and take some small actions daily to expand your life and to fulfill your purpose.

I do hope you've enjoyed this month's issue. Write to me with any comments or feedback you'd like to give.

See you next month!
