Out
and About

Seasons Greetings & a Happy New 2004 Year to all of our readers!
Many, many thanks to my family, friends, professional colleagues,
strategic partners, HR & Training Executives and all the fabulous
participants of my public and in- house programmes for making
2003 one of my best years in the learning and development dimension.
I couldn't have done it without your help, and I want you
to know that you are very special people who have featured in
my own personal & professional development.
I look forward to your continued support. There's one
thing I can promise you, and that is you will always keep on
getting the best performance, value-for-money, and continuing
dedicated efforts from me and my associates to make for an extraordinary
quality of life.
Let's keep on growing together. We're not a tree that
we have to stay rooted to one spot. We can choose to stretch
ourselves and to move far beyond what we're capable of doing,
and that, frankly, is a special trait available to us as human
beings. So let's do this stretch, and this will keep on improving
the quality of our lives at work, at home and in our relationships.

Dear reader,
Firstly, apologies to my professional colleague, Alvin
Lee for forgetting to mention him as one of the
speakers at MotivAsia 2003 held in November.
Alvin created the highly successful
product "Beachworks" which won the prestigious US
Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Award in 1997 and the US
National Parent Centre Award in 2000.
He also received recognition in major US TV programs
such as CNBC's "Today's Show", ABC, "A Stroke of
Genius", "Talking Point" & "Good Morning Singapore".
Do check out his website at Beautiful
MindWorks.
I had his name in mind but plumb forgot to add it to the
list of speakers in my newsletter last month!

Mastering Communication
"If you just communicate, you can get by. But if
you communicate skilfully, you can work miracles"
"You cannot speak that which you do not know.
You cannot share that which you do not feel. You
cannot translate that which you do not have. And you
cannot give that which you do not possess. To give it
and to share it, and for it to be effective, you first
need to have it. Good communication starts with good
preparation"
Both of these sayings come from one of my favourite
mentors, Jim Rohn. This month, I'd like to focus
on body language, and also on the voice that you use.
Many newcomers to presentations or public
speaking have many questions. Three often asked
questions are:
1) What do I do with my nervousness?
2) How and where do I stand and what do I do with my
hands?
3) How best can I use my voice?
I've written a short article in reply to these questions -
so just follow the link below, and happy reading!

Born to Win - Championing the Inner Child
Our inner child is our self-esteem. This is
another way to look at this concept. We need to inform
your inner child of the positive attributes,
competencies, skills and abilities which you possess to
enable your inner child to prevail and succeed in any
challenge or crisis currently causing the anxiety,
pressure, and tension. Positively reinforcing and
affirming your inner child is giving yourself the "self-
talk'' necessary to believe in: I am, I can, and I will
statements of encouragement, deservedness, and self-
confidence to prevail in your recovery process towards
championing our inner child.
Love your inner child in an unconditional way.
Embrace your inner child for just being you
rather than for what you can do or accomplish in life.
We need to love our inner child, for being who you are,
will continue the healing which is necessary to prevail
against any current sense of setback, failure, or
disappointment you may have been experiencing.
Direct yourself to take care of your inner child.
You need to be there for youself when you need
it. Direct yourself towards your inner child to be
the light of your centre, and your link with your Higher
Power or Universal Force, whatever that is.
Remind yourself that you are never frightened, alone,
abandoned, or forgotten when your inner child and your
Higher Power are with you. Your inner child is a source
of mighty strength and hope for you when the struggles
become overwhelming.
Strengthening your inner child is forging your self-
esteem to become a band of steel. You become
invincible through life's adversities. And that makes
champions out of us. Most people suffer from a lack of
self-esteem, which gives them a lack of self-
confidence, which is an ever spiralling loop into
mediocrity. We have the innate power to change
this.

In closing ...
I do hope that you've made the time to write down
your goals for 2004. If you haven't, then there's
still time to do so.
Find at least a good hour or so that you can shut
yourself off from the maddening crowd. Close the
door and put on your favourite relaxation music, grab
your journal and a pen. Sit in an upright position on
your favourite lounge chair, take three deep breaths
and relax your entire body.
Then take your journal, and at the top, write down the
following sentence, "What I want to..." Then list down
the following headings:
Be, Do, Have, Give, Create, Achieve and leave several
lines between each heading.
Under each heading, brainstorm and think and
freewheel without being critical of your thoughts all the
things that you would like to do under those
headings.
Be honest with yourself. Feel those things that you are
writing down with passion.
Make sure you have balance in your life goals by
including items that fit under mental, spiritual,
emotional, physical, family, and financial categories.
Once you have the list of things that you really
want, start to rank them.
Take your time and prioritise the top few goals that
you really want to achieve for 2004.
Next, put some action steps and time lines next to
each of your prioritised goals. Use the SMART
formula
to aid you in being realistic with your goals.
Are your goals:
S = specific
M = measurable
A = achievable
R = realistic
T = time framed
Always take some small daily action steps towards
attaining those goals. Write down your action
steps into your diary so that you can remind yourself to
do them habitually every day.
Take massive
action. That is the key. Replace every bad habit
with a good one! See what works, change what
doesn't, be flexible but go hard on them! And I'll see
you at the top!
I hope you've enjoyed this issue of Ricky's Review.
I would love some feedback from readers, so please
email me with your comments and ideas for future
issues.
See you next month!
