Out
and About

In September, I ran two sessions of
"Self- Empowerment
...Championing Your Inner Self"
for the Customer Service Officers (CSO's) of the Civil Aviation
Authority of Singapore (CAAS). Their feedback was "WOW" ... it
was such an experience! And further discussions are being held
to see whether I can run another series of this for the rest of
the CSO's. The programme is based on human developmental needs,
emotional intelligence and on John Bradshaw's concept of your
'inner' child. (Read my article on Self-Empowerment - see the
opposite column)
Special thanks to Varunee Dahlmann of CAAS and Mabel of
Changi Airport Recreation Club (CARC) for arranging all
of this to happen.

Dear Reader,
What a fabulous September! A great month
because firstly, it's my birthday month, and secondly,
it's Springtime in Australia! I had a short break in
Sydney (gorgeous weather - blue skies, crisp nip in the
air). I also enjoyed working with two especially
outstanding clients. One of them is the Civil Aviation
Authority of Singapore (CAAS) where I
presented the long-running "Target Setting and
Performance Management" for their Division 1 Officers
plus others.
Thanks to Annie, Aigner, Shida, and Lee Phing
for helping to make the programmes run so
smoothly.
Did you know that Singapore Changi Airport had its
humble beginnings in 1911? Go and check out its
timeline history (click on the link above) to see how it
won numerous accolades of "best airport in the world!"
The other client is M1 - check out why
M1 is "Everywhere Under the Sun." I conducted
the internationally acclaimed programme, "Think On
Your Feet(R)" for their executives and this has
added immeasurably to their suite of leadership skills
and communication mastery!
Special thanks to Koay Saw Lean and Evelyn Heng
for helping to sort out all the arrangements.
I hope you enjoy this month's newsletter.
Make it a fabulous October, and I'll see you next month.

Mastering Communications
Is communication truly a basic life skill? I think
it is. It's as important as the skills that get you
through school or the skills that earn you a good living
or to have a wonderful family life. Your ability to
communicate well also ensures your personal happiness.
When you're less effective in communicating, you might
find that work may be okay, but your family shouts at
the dinner table. Your mate may be often cool, but you
have a great time out with the 'boys' or the 'girls'.
I wrote about Active
Listening last month. Did you try that out?
Did
you practice that at all? When you actually go ahead
and practice active listening you will find that other
people will begin to have a new respect for you. Now
what could be better than that?

Customer Service
Several service quality factors come to mind
immediately whenever I'm out shopping or
receiving a service.Service providers, through their
front-line staff, should exhibit the following qualities:
-
understanding, before proposing
- communication
- tact
- integrity
- honesty
- anticipatory
- educated and trained
- qualified to give that service
- focused on customer's needs
- interest in customer
Just put these qualities into practice in your
organisation and watch your businesses make that
quantum leap in legendary customer service!

Self-Empowerment - Championing Your Inner Child
We have many roots of self-defeating patterns of
living. As we keep on practicing and living old
learned habits over the years, we may find that these
habits no longer work for us in our new adult context.
So we keep on trying harder to be happy but feel less
comfortable and even begin to struggle more as time
passes.
These habits can eventually interfere with our
quality of life. In fact, we may even experience
depression, troubles in our home and work relationships,
and difficulty in gaining self-empowerment.
Eventually, we must stop and examine our
lives. As one ancient Greek philosopher said, "The
unexamined life is not worth living".
One option to counteract this is to identify and
explore early patterns and habits that may have been
useful in childhood. But if these are now causing
problems in adulthood we must acquire emotional,
behavioural, and cognitive tools to begin to lead a more
satisfying home and work life in the here and now.
This is certainly food for thought...wouldn't you agree?
